There wasn’t a new Beautiful People post last month, but that was probably a good thing since I was so busy. Luckily, I did manage to spend a good amount of time writing, including doing a little more editing on a recently finished first draft, Forgotten, so I decided to talk about its protagonist, Rain, and get to know her even better. You can find out more about this writing meme, hosted by Cait and Sky, here.
Rain is the protagonist of this paranormal mystery – at the beginning of the book, she wakes up with no memories, so I need to get to know the “new” Rain as well as figure out who she was before she lost her memories, which is actually lots of fun for me as a writer.
01 // How often do they smile? Would they smile at a stranger?
Rain smiles all the time – she’s a generally happy and upbeat person. She would totally smile at a stranger, but if someone is mean to her, she wouldn’t give them the gift of her dazzling smile. If she’s not smiling at strangers, then you know something is wrong.
02 // What is the cruelest thing they’ve ever been told? And what was their reaction?
I’m not sure I even want to know – she did not have a great life before the book began, surrounded by people who didn’t care about her other than one person – people weren’t necessarily outright cruel to her, but they simply didn’t care.
03 // What is the kindest thing they’ve ever been told? And what was their reaction?
Rain is always touched by the fact that Melissa and Rick Norton, the couple who took her in, seem to care so much about her, even though she’s basically a stranger who came unexpectedly into their life. They don’t have to say anything specifically kind to her, they simply have to show that they care.
04 // What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?
These questions are just meant to mean to my poor little amnesiac, aren’t them? That being said, in the current draft of Forgotten, the book ends with Rain suddenly remembering a smell or a sound that tickles at some memories of her best friend and girlfriend from her old life. So, that’s so powerful because the girl was extremely important to her and was such a large part of her life before the book began.
05 // What books do you think your character would benefit from reading?
Rain would love the girl power of The Revenge Playbook and The Mediator books, and she would totally love Ginny and Hermione, not to mention all the magic and feelings of belonging, of Harry Potter.
06 // Have they ever been seriously injured? How severely? How did they react?
She was sometimes experimented on back in her pre-book life, but nothing too serious – the scientists who kept her were much more concerned with simply observing her and seeing how her powers affected her. If she got hurt, then she would definitely be a baby about it, but only for attention – she really would be strong, underneath the melodramatic tears and demands.
07 // Do they like and get along with their neighbours?
She doesn’t really know her actual neighbours at the Norton’s house, but she got to know her desk neighbour, Alexis, quite quickly. She recognized Alexis’s loneliness and wanted a real friend, one she made on her own without Hunter’s help.
08 // On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being easy and 10 being difficult) how easy are they to get along with?
She’s probably a 6 or so – she’s quite easy to get along with, but when she gets annoyed or mad, she can be a tiny terror. This is partially related to the fact that she has powers based on her emotions, but she’s also a very fiery personality, for better or for worse.
09 // If they could travel anywhere in the world, where would they go?
She would go anywhere and everywhere – after all, everything is new to a girl who grew up imprisoned and then ended up with amnesia. She’s perfectly happy as long as she’s around people she likes, but she does like getting to experience new things, including new places.
10 // Who was the last person they held hands with?
I would say that it’s her love interest, Hunter, but she’s a very touchy-feely person, so it could really be any of her friends. The last time she held hands with someone in a romantic sense would be Hunter, though, and before that it was only the mysterious girl of her past – she didn’t get the chance to be touchy-feely in her old life.
