Here’s another Beautiful People post about my writing from the fabulous Cait and Sky!
Instead of focusing on one of my bigger romances, I decided to talk about one that I don’t focus on as much but could always learn more about: one of the POV characters, Autumn, and her love interest, May, from one of my oldest and most beloved stories, Emerald.
1. How did they first meet?
Autumn, along with her cousins, are suddenly transported to the world of Pouverà, and after they’re picked up by May’s older brother to come back home and learn about where the hell they are and how to get back, May meets her.
2. What were their first impressions of each other?
It’s the middle of the night when they meet, and Autumn has no idea where she is and what’s going on, so it’s not surprising that she’s not in the best mood, especially since she’s often moody at the best of times. Therefore, they’re a bit antagonistic toward each other because Autumn is cranky and May is amused and wants to irritate as much as possible. Autumn also knows that she’s attracted to May at least somewhat, but despite how confident she tries to act and the fact that she’s pretty much always been “out,” she’s never actually had a girlfriend, only crushes on likely straight girls, so she’s a bit scared. May’s world is much more accepting of sexuality and pretty much everyone is bisexual, so she’s totally comfortable and is further amused by Autumn’s fears, which obviously causes some friction between them.
3. How long have they been a couple?
I’m currently working on the first book, and they aren’t actually a couple yet, but I think it’ll become official by the end of this book – no spoilers, because it can always change since I’m still writing it.
4. How committed/loyal are they to each other? Would they break up over a secret or a disagreement? Could stress drive them apart? Would they die for each other?
Considering how much May likes messing with Autumn and the fact that Autumn has trouble showing affection, they definitely care about each other. Right now, they rush into their deeper feelings a little too quickly, but even when I rewrite it, I want it to be obvious even before they become a couple that they care about each other. At some point, something happens where May has to be left behind for *reasons*, and Autumn is even angrier and harder to get along with because she misses May but doesn’t want anyone to know that. They would totally fight over something small, like a disagreement, as well as big things like secrets, but they would only break up for a very, very good reason. I think they might hesitate a second before dying for each other, but ultimately, they’re each other’s True Love with capital letters, so yes, they would die for each other.
5. List five “food quirks” they know about each other (ex. how they take their coffee, if they’re allergic to something, etc. – and feel free to mention other non-food quirks!).
Autumn knows that May is a little obsessed with coffee, which her mother and brother sometimes bring her from our world since coffee beans don’t grow in hers; as a healer in training who works with plants and other natural things a lot, she knows a lot about what plants are edible and which ones are bad or could be deadly; she’s quite good at cooking, since she also needs to be good at mixing and creating potions and other healing-related-things (obviously need to work on the terminology a bit); May isn’t allergic to anything because Pouverà is a magical place where healers have long gotten rid of them; and she doesn’t eat anything other than coffee from our world because she likes more natural things grown and created in Pouverà.
May knows that Autumn hates coffee and doesn’t understand how May can stand it, let alone beg her brother to bring her some every time he travels over to our world; she stays away from orange foods because she’s sick of people mocking her about her red hair and mostly takes it out on the color orange for no reason; she sometimes forgets to eat when she’s really into her songwriting; when her songwriting isn’t going well, she’s more likely to go a little overboard and probably eat a little too much junk food; and she tends to eat a little less when she’s around her cousin because Summer is quite thin (due to her own issues, but Autumn doesn’t know that) and Summer can be a typical mean girl at times and point out when Autumn takes second helpings while Summer is barely done with her own, smaller portion.
6. Does anyone disapprove of their relationship?
No. Pouverà is also a magical place in terms of much more acceptance, and no one in Autumn’s real life really knows about May because how can you gush about your awesome girlfriend who lives in another world? Plus, Autumn is a loner, so other than her intermediate family, like her cousins, no one really knows that May exists, let alone disapproves.
7. What would be an ideal date?
They’d have to be on their own – not just without siblings or cousins tagging along, but without any strangers around, like in a public place. They would probably find a nice place out in the woods around May’s family’s estate or an relatively empty house with no one else bugging them.
8. What are their personality dynamics? Similar, contrasting? Do they fight a lot or mesh perfectly?
They can be similar, which is why they often have friction. They’re both sarcastic and like to win fights and debates, but while Autumn is a little shy when it comes to romance, May believes in PDA a lot more, which can cause some problems. May loves teasing and messing with Autumn, while Autumn is more likely to verbally spar with May because she’s annoyed. May’s arm is paralyzed after an encounter with a special beetle that causes paralysis, and she has no problem talking about it while never letting it make her seem weaker than she is, while Autumn tries to ignore it because she doesn’t want to make May feel lesser, which often ends up annoying May more.
9. What have been their best and worst moments together as a couple?
Well, they haven’t been an official couple yet, and unfortunately I haven’t had enough scenes between just the two of them as the focus of the scene, so that needs to change so that I can answer this question in the future.
10. Where do they see themselves and their relationship in the next few years?
Despite how strong their relationship will be, there will be a point where they’re on the outs for various reasons I’m not going to talk about. Ultimately, though, they’re soulmates and need to be together as long as they’re both alive (which is a debatable time table, considering they’re in the series where I’m most likely to kill off my beloved characters…).
Okay, now I need to go and write a bunch of scenes with these two together, because this post got me really excited about their relationships and their characters in general. Happy writing, everyone – oh, and Valentine’s Day, I suppose.
